MY LATEST WORK

Dive into some of my UX/UI projects, showcasing the challenges faced, processes undertaken, and solutions implemented.

THA Campus App

2023-2024

The Campus App of the Technical University Augsburg (THA) is a web app that centralizes services for students and faculty, including schedules, grades, cafeteria menus, and interactive live lectures.

Impact / my role: Through optimizing the structure of the screens, I made the app UI more user-friendly and accessible. Adjustments to the information architecture enabled students and lecturers to find specific screens and functions much quicker. I developed high-fidelity wireframes, justified my design decisions to stakeholders, and contributed to building a modular design system.

Challenge and solution: Designing for diverse user groups required role-specific UX strategies: Since the needs of students and lecturers differ significantly, each feature was tailored through targeted analysis to meet each group’s requirements.

ADAC: Usability and Distraction Test of Car UIs

2022

The Technical University Augsburg and the ADAC (German Automobile Club) jointly examined six in-car HMI systems to assess their usability and potential to distract drivers. The study highlights how different interaction concepts influence intuitive operation and driving safety. Both qualitative data from user surveys and quantitative data collected via eye-tracking glasses contributed to the evaluation. Click the button below to see the results.

Impact / my role: I was involved in the preparation, evaluation and the on-site execution. During the sessions, I assisted participants and managed the setup and monitoring of measurement systems to ensure the testing ran smoothly. Afterward, I analyzed the eye-tracking data and survey responses, compiling the data for the final test report.

Challenge and solution: Manually analyzing 48 test runs would have been highly time-consuming. The selection of appropriate research methods and software workflows upfront enabled near-complete automation of the process, allowing faster and more efficient analysis of the eye-tracking and survey data.

Design System for SaaS UI

2025

As part of my master’s thesis, I partnered with SEWOBE AG to develop a scalable design system for their 'VereinsMANAGER', a cloud-based SaaS application that helps nonprofit organizations manage members, finances, and internal processes. The design system includes brand and design guidelines as well as a modular UI component library with a strong focus on accessibility.

As part of my master’s thesis, I partnered with SEWOBE AG in Augsburg to develop a scalable design system for their 'VereinsMANAGER,' a cloud-based SaaS application that helps nonprofit organizations manage members, finances, and internal processes. The design system includes brand and design guidelines as well as a library of UI components.

Impact / my role: I analyzed existing UI issues, identified user requirements, and defined key design principles. Based on the research, I established foundational design standards covering typography, color, and accessibility, and developed Figma-based components such as menus, cards, and buttons. Final usability testing of the redesigned UI modules confirmed the design decisions.

Challenge and solution: The primary user group of the software consisted of power users familiar with the existing interface. On top of that, as a complex ERP system, VereinsMANAGER needs to display large amounts of data within limited screen space. Both challenges were addressed through consistency: standardized UI components improve efficiency by providing consistent patterns that reduce cognitive load. It also allows power users to continue following their familiar workflows intuitively after the redesign.

Detecting User Stress from Manipulative UI Designs

2023

In my bachelor thesis I explored the psychological effects of Dark Patterns (manipulative interaction patterns) in web interfaces. A lab-based user test identified stress reactions to deceptive patterns through four biosignals, such as pupil diameter and galvanic skin response. The pilot study found that test participants increased physiological stress indicators when exposed to manipulative UI components. Click the button below to see a summary of the results.

Impact / my role: As the sole author of my thesis project, I single-handedly initiated collaborations with academic and industry partners and took full ownership of the usability test, from designing the study and setting up the lab to conducting the tests, analyzing the data, and interpreting and visualizing the findings.

Challenge and solution: The study required methods and devices close to medical-psychological testing. To ensure accurate data collection and interpretation, I established collaborations and interviews with University Clinics Jena and Gießen, as well as the company movisens for sensor technology.

MY DESIGN JOURNEY

I’m Daniel, one of the younger Millennials, who grew up mostly analog, discovered computers as a kid, and smartphones in my teens. My career has followed a similar path: starting as a print-focused media designer, I soon discovered my passion for shaping the interaction between humans and computers. Driven by this interest, I pursued a Bachelor’s that combined user-centered design with programming as well as computer science, and later specialized in mobile experiences and mixed reality in my Master’s.

Recently, I’ve been teaching as a lecturer at Technical University Augsburg, sharing my experience in UX. I believe teaching is the best way to keep learning.

And here I am today, excited for the next challenge. Discover some of my milestones and let’s connect!

Lecturer in the course “Screen design” (2025)

“Screen design” is a course for fourth-semester students in the Communication Design program at Technical University Augsburg. My role as a lecturer included developing a didactic concept, preparing and structuring the course content, teaching weekly classes, and administering the exam.

Scholarships (2024/2025)

During my master's degree, I received a German and a Swiss scholarship. The Swiss scholarship was related to a semester abroad in Lucerne.

Speaker at the World Usability Day (2023)

In 2023, I was given the opportunity to present the results of my bachelor's thesis (see Projects above) to an expert audience at the World Usability Day in Augsburg, Germany.

Awarded by Marketing For Future (2021)

The Marketing for Future Award honors Germany’s best sustainable marketing campaigns (www.bock.am). In 2021 I was awarded for my semester project “Browsing Awareness.” The project visualized the CO₂ emissions of web surfing by letting a computer mouse leave physical scratch traces on a mousepad. (Full article: www.page-online.de -> Browsing Awareness: Surfen mit allen Sinnen)

IHK-certified trainer (2022)

I completed the German Ausbildereignungsprüfung (AdA certificate), qualifying me to train and supervise apprentices - a required credential of the chamber of industry and commerce (IHK) in Germany.
